The pilgrimage holds profound religious significance in Hinduism. It refers to the four sacred sites (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. According to Hindu mythology, undertaking this journey is believed to cleanse one’s soul of sins and lead to spiritual enlightenment. The devotees believe that visiting these sacred sites fulfills their religious duties and earns them blessings from the deities.

  • Yamunotri: The source of Yamuna River, Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna, is a symbol of purity and is believed to cleanse the soul of those who bathe in her waters. Pilgrims visit Yamunotri temple to offers prayers and seek blessing from the goddess Yamuna.  
  • Gangotri: Gangotri is a the origin of divine Ganges River, which holds immense spiritual importance in Hinduism. The temple is dedicated to goddess Ganga, who is believed to have descended from the heavens of earth to purify the souls of mankind. 
  • Kedarnath: Kedarnath Temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva, one of the 12 revered jyotirlingas. holding immense spiritual significance for Hindus, and is also part of the Panchkedar. 
  • Badrinath: The Badrinath temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and located in the Garhwal Himalayas, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site and part of the Chardham Yatra, holding immense spiritual and mythological significance for Hindus. The temple is believed to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. 

Opening and Closing date of the Journey 2025 

The opening and closing dates vary every year depending on Hindu religious calendars, generally starting in April or May and closing in October or November. In 2025 the tentative opening dates for the sites are as follows: 

  • Yamunotri: 30th April 2025 
  • Gangotri: 30th April 2025 
  • Kedarnath: 2nd May 2025 
  • Badrinath: 2nd May 2025 

Best Time to Visit 

The pilgrimage typically opens in April or May and closes in October or November, but during July and August, the monsoon season makes it advisable to avoid this journey. May and June have good weather but are crowded, so September and October are the best months to visit due to favorable weather and fewer crowds. 

Registration for the Journey 

Registration is mandatory for those planning to visit the Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri Temples or Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand. The registration process is easy, with the government providing both offline and online options. Here is a detailed guide about how to register for the Temples.  

Online registration for chardham has started from 20 March 2025 and Pilgrims can also signup though the Uttarakhand tourism department mobile app or official website. 

Latest Update 

Registration has started from 20 March 2025. Devotees must provide Aadhar card details for registration. This year, 60 percent of registrations will be done online, while 40 percent will be offline. There will be no fee involved in the tourist registration.

How to reach  

The Char dham yatra can be reached via road, rail or air. 

  • By Road: Pilgrims can travel  Pilgrims can travel to Uttarakhand by road from major cities like Delhi, Dehradun, and Haridwar. Regular bus services and private taxis are also  available (from Delhi, Haridwar or Dehradun) for transportation to the Chardham.  
  • By Rail: The nearest railway station to the Chardham are Haridwar and Rishikesh. From these stations, pilgrims can easily hire taxis or board buses to reach the pilgrimage sites. 
  • By Air: The nearest airport to the Chardham sites are Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun and Pantnagar Airport in Uttarakhand. From these airports, pilgrims can easily hire taxis or take connecting flights to reach  Chardham site. 

Suggest Route for Chardham Yatra 

The chardham yatra usually starts from Yamunotri then goes Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

  • Yamunotri: The journey begins from the town of Rishikesh or Dehradun, from where pilgrims travel to the town of Barkot. From Barkot, they proceed to Yamunotri. ( 6Km trek takes 4hrs) 
  • Gangotri: After visiting Yamunotri, pilgrims return to Barkot and then proceed to the town of Uttarkashi or Harshil, the base for the Gangotri pilgrimage. From Uttarkashi, they travel to Gangotri by road. 
  • Kedarnath: After completing the Gangotri pilgrimage, pilgrims return to Uttarkashi or Harshil and then proceed to the town of Guptkashi or Sonprayag, the base for the Kedarnath pilgrimage. From Guptkashi, they travel to Gaurikund by road and then trek to Kedarnath.(16km trek and takes 10hrs)
  • Badrinath: The final dham of the journey takes pilgrims from Kedarnath to the town of Joshimath via Guptkashi. From Joshimath, they proceed to Badrinath by road. 

Best Places to stay in Chardham Yatra 

Chardham yatra takes usually 9 night 10 days, and yatra starts from Haridwar or Dehradun. 

  • Yamunotri: When we go Yamunotri from Haridwar or Dehradun via Barkot. So mostly Pilgrims Stay in Barkot, because in barkot have lot of options for stay and Barkot is a base for the Yamunotri Pilgrimage.  
  • Gangotri: After visiting yamunotri, pilgrims return to Barkot then proceed to the Gangorti via Uttarkashi, so the best option for stay is Uttarkashi or Harshil (A hidden gem of Uttarakhand), we will suggest you stay in Harshil so you can explore Harshil valley a beautiful village near Gangotri. 
  • Kedarnath: After visiting Gangotri, pilgrims  proceed to the kedarnath via Guptkashi, so the best option for stay is Guptkashi or Sonprayag the base of kedarnath dham. 
  • Badrinath: After visiting Kedarnath, pilgrims proceed to the Badrinath via Joshimath, so pilgrims mostly stay in Joshimath, Govind ghat or Pandukeshwar. 

Things to carry for Chardham Yatra 

  • Warm Clothes: When you pack bag for chardham yatra must add warm clothes because chardham yatra places have a minus temperature in night, also Bring umbrella or raincoat as well as comfortable walking shoes.  
  • Sun Protection: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are necessary to protect yourself from the sun, especially at high altitudes. 
  • First Aid Kit: Every trip you take, including the Chardham yatra, should include a first aid pack. If you become ill while travelling, painkillers, glucose tablets and ORS can be helpful. 
  • Dry fruits and Snacks: Snacks come in hand while travelling. They are also necessary for lengthy trips. 
  • Cash: There are not many ATMs or places where you can use a credit card on your Char dham Yatra. Hence, it would be helpful if you have the necessary cash in hand. 
  • Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated by carrying a reusable water bottle and refilling it throughout the day because during char dham yatra have lots of stop where you will refilling your water bottle and also save your money. 
  • Portable charger or power bank: Keep your electronic devices charged, especially if you’re relying on them for navigation so power bank is very helpful. 
  • Personal Hygiene: Take your personal hygiene like toothpaste, brush, shampoo, soap, moisturiser and sanitizer etc. 
  • Travel Documents and ID proof: Carry a valid photo ID (passport, Aadhaar card, etc.) and any permits like Chardham yatra registration or vouchers required for the journey.
