Day-by-day Itinerary
5-day plan with pace, stay, transfers and meals on each day. Swap, slow down, or add anything, every day is editable before you pay.
Arrive Haridwar by train (Shatabdi from New Delhi, 4.5hrs). Hotel check-in. Sacred dip at Har Ki Pauri. Evening Ganga Aarti at sunset, the most hypnotic ritual you will witness. Thousands of earthen lamps float down the Ganga while priests swing flaming urns in perfect circles. Prepare mentally for tomorrow's journey into the mountains.
Depart 7am. Rishikesh stop: Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula (the swinging suspension bridges over the Ganga). Triveni Ghat, confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Continue through Devprayag, where the Alaknanda meets the Bhagirathi and becomes the Ganga (the most sacred confluence). Through Srinagar, Rudraprayag (Alaknanda meets Mandakini). Arrive Guptkashi (1,319m). Visit Vishwanath Temple here, Kedarnath's Shiva comes to reside here in winter when the main temple closes. Rest. Acclimatize.
Wake 5am. Light breakfast. Drive 25km to Sonprayag, change to local jeep to Gaurikund (2,674m). Trek begins. Route: Jungle Chatti (4km, ~1.5hrs), first chai stop, forest and waterfall. Bheem Bali (8km, ~2.5hrs), dhaba lunch, river crossing. Linchauli (12km, ~4hrs), the valley opens, Kedarnath peak comes into view for the first time. Kedarnath Base Camp (14km). Final 2km: steep stone path through a glacial bowl. Arrive Kedarnath (3,583m). The temple appears from the stone, ancient, black, surrounded by permanent snow. Check in dharamshala. Attend evening aarti at the temple, bells, incense, mountain darkness. Sleep close to Shiva.
3:30am: Queue for Brahm Muhurta darshan (predawn worship, most auspicious). The priests open the temple at first light. Abhishek (holy bath of the Jyotirlinga) if pre-booked. The darshan inside the ancient stone temple, with 5,000-metre peaks visible through the doorway, changes something permanently. Return trek after breakfast (5-6hrs down). Arrive Gaurikund by 2pm. Drive back to Haridwar (5hrs). Arrive Haridwar by 9pm.
Morning: final Ganga dip at Har Ki Pauri, completing the yatra with the sacred river. Visit Chandi Devi Temple by ropeway (optional). Buy prasad (sacred offerings) to take home. Transfer to Haridwar station. Board train to Delhi. Trip ends. The Jyotirlinga has been visited. You carry something back that cannot be named.
